Project Reveal: Mid-Century Modern Makeover
Come along with us as we take 3 bathrooms from Drab to Fab!!
Hello there friends!!
Today, we’re excited to take you behind the scenes of our latest project that was all about transforming three charming bathrooms into spaces that are both functional and beautiful. From clever design solutions to fun tile choices, we embraced the challenge of reimagining these petite loo’s with personality and style.
These adorable little privy’s were at the end of their useful life with products that were not working well, were outdated, and plainly just ready to be retired.
So, we set out to give them a nice tidy-up!!
Thankfully, all three spaces had a footprint that worked well, so there was no need to re-organize their layouts. With all three of the conveniences being on the smaller side, the design challenge was to maximize every inch of space while making a strong visual impact. One of the powder rooms was extremely small in space, which was a really fun design challenge!
We wanted to ensure each room had its own personality, while still feeling cohesive with the home’s Mid-Century Modern character. And of course we wanted to take into account both the homeowner's and home's character in mind. We looked to balance bold, modern elements with natural, earthy touches.
The question is: how do we make the design both functional and fabulous, while still reflecting the home’s original charm? We focused on these main elements:
● Clever Storage Solutions
● Color and Contrast
● Textures and Patterns
● Sense of calm and peace
● Openness
● Character and Charm
● Making a lasting Impact
We knew that smart storage was key to making these ladies and gents work. In the girl’s ensuite, for example, we designed a sleek floating vanity paired with a flush-mount medicine cabinet behind the mirror. We included plenty of hooks, and extended the countertop to create a handy ledge above the toilet, perfect for extra toiletries or decorative touches. Most hygiene products don't take up a lot of real-estate (unless you have a lot of them!) so we carved out bits here and there that add up to a lot of function and usability. This not only saved space, but it also kept the look clean and modern.
To create that open feeling, we first used frameless glass to lessen the visual impact of the shower enclosures. Secondly, white subway tiles and white paints were utilized along with quiet, understated terazzo flooring which blurs lines and reflects light. With smaller layouts, creating that sense of openness is crucial!
One of the most fun parts of this project was getting to play with different tiles. Each lavatory had its own unique tile story, and we took full advantage of the opportunity to explore textures, colors, and patterns!
We kept the walls and floors simple upstairs. But then we contrasted that with a geometric and colorful pop of pink Clé Tile in the girls ensuite. It was also fun to mix in this mint green sink for a dramatic effect. These colors are not only fun and youthful, but also have a calming effect.
In the lower level, we were understated and tonal on most of the walls, but contradicted that with the vanity wall featuring a deep emerald glazed clay tile wainscot. Keeping the regal green theme going for this royal throne room is a gorgeous honed pebble tile from Ann Sacks.
On a really fun note, I just love that in the lower level bath, we were able to utilize the client's existing vanity that they had custom built years ago, but had yet to install it. This palette worked off of the cherry cabinet- adding a top and vessel sink. The rich colors create an inviting ambiance while also giving a sense of serenity. It’s so fun finding that sweet spot where colors and textures complement rather than compete!
So there you have it! Each project was a chance to stretch our design muscles and create something truly special. We tackled small spaces with big ideas, turning outdated rooms into stunning retreats.
